Why turn-based combat works so well on a phone
There's a reason turn-based RPGs keep thriving on phones while twitchy action games struggle. A touchscreen is a lousy gamepad, but it's a fantastic board for deliberate choices.
When the game waits for you, a small screen stops being a problem. You can read every stat, tap carefully, and plan without fat-fingering a dodge. Ironvale Chronicles leans into this with its turn-delay system, which turned every fight into a little puzzle for me.
The trade-off is menu design. Combat can be elegant while the inventory is a nightmare, and sadly that's common. A great battle system deserves an equally thought-out way to manage your gear.
If you've bounced off mobile RPGs before, try one that's proudly turn-based. The pace suits the device, and you can actually play it in the short bursts a phone life demands.
